Born in Hopewell, Virginia, on June 6, 1954, she was just four years old when her parents divorced. She was sent to live with her grandparents in Cool Ridge, West Virginia. Her grandparents’ house had no electricity or running water; and during the four years Cynthia lived there, she was unable to travel far from the house, since her grandparents did not own a car. Growing up in a poor area of Appalachia, she was unsure of what she could do with her life after graduating from high school. Inspired by her mother’s example, she decided to go to college.
But while drama wins awards, seriousness does not necessarily translate into popularity or longevity. It is entirely possible that generations of young readers will still be enjoying the adventures of Captain Underpants long after The Paperboy and other Caldecott winners are forgotten.
